Helpful Tips:
School leavers – what to include in your CV?
When leaving school / college to embark on the world of work it can be difficult to know what to put in your CV, after all, you’ve just been at school and not had a job yet.
Your personal skills and qualities need to be highlighted:
- Good timekeeping / attendance records
- Creative skills or analytical skills – think of art / science projects
- Computer skills
- Numeracy and literacy skills – have you entered any competitions / team events?
You also need to take account of any positions of responsibility or out of school activities and what they have taught you:
- School prefect
- Library assistant
- Sports teams – shows teamwork, commitment, leadership (if captain)
- Project work or careers day tasks undertaken
- Charity works, through school or outside, perhaps you care for a relative?
- Any part time jobs
- Hobbies and interests – not just Facebook and shopping! If you go horse riding this would have taught you how to care for animals etc
- Highlight any language skills you have
2. Gap Years
Unfortunately in today’s tough times employers are more interested in work experience than life experience. A gap year should be about you learning new things, having new experiences, having fun – but will not necessarily enhance your job prospects.
Use perhaps three months of the year to get some relevant skills leading on from your degree (perhaps temping, freelance work or project work) and the remaining nine months having fun!
