Balancing work, rest and play is critical to enjoying life to the full. CV writing and learning how to write a CV may help to find that equilibrium.

While a large part of life revolves around work, careers and the need to generate enough income to pay bills, we should all strive to find the perfect balance between work, rest and play.

Too much work, or the wrong type of job, will have a detrimental effect on our health. Inversely, not finding a job that provides mental stimulation, a healthy level of competitiveness and the right scale of income to enjoy the best lifestyle is not ideal.

Key to creating that balance naturally boils down to the employment we take, but rather than settle for the word take, we should look to CV writing as a means to finding the employment we want.

So how does CV writing help? I’m stuck on starting to write a CV!

The first stage to writing a CV, and not just writing any CV but writing the CV that succeeds in achieving your goals, is at times messy. The best modern jargon to describe the CV writing process is a brain dump. That doesn’t sound great, but a brain dump is the essential first step.

Write down your aspirations in terms of the job you are looking for, what can it bring professionally and to your lifestyle, how can it contribute to a healthy life. It doesn’t need to be flowing, just full of facts – what you want, what you can offer, what you have achieved and where you want to be. This encapsulates the true meaning of a curriculum vitae which translates as “the course of [my] life”.

Armed with that information, you can start writing your CV and when you find the specific job you seek, start to redraft and tailor your unique offering and how it fits in with the prospective job.

A CV is the paper, or increasingly digital, equivalent of what is often termed an “elevator pitch” – the short ride between floors in a building when you have the chance to convince someone as to your values. It should be written professionally, free from any typing or language mistakes and more than anything else has to be convincing. An important measure of honesty has to be present throughout, never be tempted to falsify your achievements, education or work experience as it will inevitably come back to haunt you.
